St Joseph Traditional Catholic Church was founded in 1855 by German immigrants. They sought a familiar place to worship. They initially gathered in a wood-frame church. By 1869, the congregation had outgrown their space.
Construction of the present St Joseph Traditional Catholic Church began in 1870. German-born architect Francis G. Himpler designed the church. The design was inspired by hallenkirken in Southern Germany. The intent was to create a welcoming space for German-American culture. The church still offers Mass in German today.
