Dedicated in January 1931, St John’s-Renfield Church stands as a testament to faith. It also represents the changing face of Glasgow. This striking church serves Kelvindale in Glasgow’s west end. It is visible from the Great Western Road.

St John’s-Renfield Church’s story is not a simple one. It is a tale of three congregations merging into one. These congregations reflected Scotland’s ecclesiastical industrial and demographic shifts. The story begins with St John’s Parish Church. This church emerged in 1819 to serve the Calton area. Glasgow was facing overcrowding and unsanitary conditions.

Dr Thomas Chalmers was the first minister. He was known as a moral reformer. Chalmers aimed to address spiritual squalor through personal contact and schooling. His ministry saw considerable success but was short-lived.

In 1819, the Renfield Church formed nearby. It started as a lay overflow. Services were first held in rented rooms. The congregation acquired a permanent site in Renfield Street in 1820. Due to population shifts, the church moved west. A new church was built in Bath Street. Dr Marcus Dods became minister in 1864. His ministry made Renfield a religious hub.

The Hyndland Congregation completes the story. It began in 1852. The congregation found a home in Cheapside Street. They dedicated it as Mitchel U.P. Church. After that, they opened a new site in Breadalbane Street. It was named Sandyford U.P. Church. World War I blocked plans for a new church. Hyndland united with St John’s-Renfield. This formed the St John’s Renfield and Hyndland congregation.

In 1923, Free St John’s and Renfield united. They adopted the Renfield building. It was more modern and convenient.

Designed by James Taylor Thomson St John’s-Renfield Church is a gothic revival masterpiece. Thomson won a competition to design the church in 1927. The build took place between 1929 and 1930. Thomson’s wedding even took place here. The church features oak carvings and stained glass. Douglas Strachan and Gordon Webster created them. The church earned a Category B listed building status in 1970.

Today St John’s-Renfield Church continues to serve. Rev Fiona Lillie has been the minister since 2009. St John’s-Renfield stands as a beacon. It shines with history and architectural beauty. It represents the enduring spirit of its community.
