The seeds of St John’s Innovation Centre were sown in 1984. Dr Chris Johnson, a visionary from St John’s College, toured US universities and science parks. He sought inspiration. He returned with a plan to develop college land in Cambridge. He wanted to invest in the burgeoning technology sector.

Fast forward to 1987. St John’s Innovation Centre opened its doors. It occupied a 21-acre plot owned by St John’s College since 1534. The goal was simple. It was to encourage the creation of knowledge-based businesses.

The success of St John’s Innovation Centre led to expansion. Dirac House opened in July 1989. The Jeffreys Building followed in February 1990. These buildings offered more space for growing companies. Dirac House honors Paul Dirac. He was a Nobel laureate and member of St John’s College. The Jeffreys Building recognizes Sir Harold Jeffreys. He was a fellow of St John’s College.

St John’s Innovation Centre is located in Silicon Fen. It is close to Cambridge Science Park. It plays a pivotal role in the Greater Cambridge technology cluster. It initiated the Cambridge Technopole Group. This is a network of business support organizations in the region.

The centre houses about 85 companies employing over 400 people. These tenants operate in diverse technologies. They include start-ups and established firms. St John’s Innovation Centre also supports virtual tenants. These are companies using the centre’s facilities without physical office space.

Many successful companies started at St John’s Innovation Centre. Autonomy Corporation, Red Gate Software, and Jagex are just a few examples. Jagex developed RuneScape. This is an online game played by over 200 million users.
