What if I told you that St. John’s Episcopal Church almost wasn’t built here? It’s true! This very spot, now home to this beautiful church, was once coveted for something far different – a shopping complex. Imagine that! St. John’s Episcopal Church, a beacon of faith in Houston since 1940, actually started its journey in a rather unusual setting – the cafeteria of River Oaks Elementary School. The congregation, though small initially, grew rapidly, prompting the need for a permanent home. They set their sights on this very location, a serene wooded plot on River Oaks Boulevard. However, the River Oaks Corporation, who owned the land, had other plans, deeming a church “unprofitable.” Undeterred, the young rector, Tom Sumners, rallied his congregation. In December 1940, just nine months after their first service, they inaugurated a beautiful limestone chapel, which still stands on these grounds. Despite the shadow of World War II, the congregation continued to expand their vision. By 1944, they had acquired almost all the land where St. John’s Episcopal Church stands today. It took another decade to gather the resources to construct the present sanctuary, finally completed in 1954. This tenacious spirit, embodying faith in action, has defined St. John’s Episcopal Church throughout its history. It stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of its congregation, a place where lives have been changed and faith has flourished for generations.
