“Why this location?” some might ask. This is the story of St. John’s Catholic Church in San Diego. It began as a vision of local Catholic ladies. They wanted a new parish in University Heights.

Let’s travel back to 1912. University Heights was part of St. Joseph’s Parish. Fr. Anton Ubach was the pastor. A group of ladies asked Fr. Nunan to create a new parish. He encouraged them. But Fr. Heffernan, his successor, disagreed.

The ladies appealed to Archbishop John J. Cantwell. He agreed with them. In late 1913, he appointed Fr. Peter McNellis as pastor. This marked the true beginning of St. John’s Catholic Church.

In 1914, the new parish worked hard. They needed property and a church building. They bought land at Lincoln and Normal. Fr. Loughlin Golden replaced Fr. McNellis. He and Fr. McCormick built the first church. It honored St. John the Evangelist. The year was 1915. This building served the parish for many years.

Fast forward to May 30, 1952. Bishop Buddy dedicated a new church. It was located at Polk and Normal. This is the St. John’s Catholic Church we see today.

Many priests have served St. John’s Catholic Church. Rev. Peter McNellis was the first. He served from 1913 to 1914. Rev. L.P. Golden followed him. He served from 1914 to 1918. Rev. Thos F. King served from 1918 to 1924. Each priest left his mark on the parish.

Rev. Martin C. Keating served from 1927 to 1930. Rev. Msgr. John B. Cotter followed. He served from 1930 to 1945. Rev. Msgr. M.C. O’Connor served for a long time. His service was from 1945 to 1969.

More recently, Bp. John P. Dolan served in 2016-2017. Rev. Kevin Casey SJ served from 2017-2021. Rev. Charles Moat SVD is the current priest. He began in 2021.

St. John’s Catholic Church offers many services. There are masses in English and Spanish. Confessions are heard in both languages. Adoration takes place on first Fridays. The Rosary is recited on weekdays.

Today, St. John’s Catholic Church stands as a beacon of faith. It reflects the dedication of its founders. It continues to serve the community. The church is more than bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to faith. It is a place of worship for all.
