Is it possible for a building to embody an entire century? St. John’s Catholic Church in Brisbane comes pretty close. The first stage, completed in 1910, saw the chancel, sanctuary, and a portion of the nave take shape. After World War II, the dream of completing the cathedral as a war memorial fueled fundraising efforts, leading to the second stage in the 1960s. Finally, in 1989, the third stage commenced, lasting an impressive twenty years. This final push saw the addition of the breathtaking west front, the towers, and the intricate stone vaulting that makes St. John’s so unique.
