Consider this: a place where young men once dreamed of priesthood now stands as a testament to faith and community. That place is near St. John XXIII Chapel in Cebu City.
St. John XXIII Chapel is more than just a chapel. It is a landmark that carries within it the echoes of dedication and transformation.
Once, the land where St. John XXIII Chapel stands housed the Saint John XXIII Seminary. It was formerly known as Seminario Menor de San Carlos. Since the 1960s, this seminary trained young men aspiring to the priesthood. Imagine young seminarians walking these grounds. They were filled with hopes of serving the Roman Catholic Church.
The Archdiocese of Cebu decided to shift the seminary’s focus. It would prioritize nurturing diverse spiritual callings. The seminary transferred its operations within the same compound. The old seminary building was demolished. In its place, 23 Minore Park was built.
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma expressed his gratitude to the developers. They retained the number 23 in the park’s name. It served as a remembrance to Pope Saint John XXIII. He was the 23rd pope. The park’s launching was purposely scheduled on June 23.
The church-owned property was commercially developed. However, it was not only intended for business. The plan was also to cater to the moral and spiritual needs of the guests.
The development plan for 23 Minore Park took inspiration from the seminary’s legacy. It became an institution that nurtured young men. These young men aspired to serve the Church. The park features a central garden, a portal and an outdoor chapel. It also has an activity area and business spaces.
Lydwena Eco was the project director of 23 Minore Park. She said that the old minor seminary had left sentimental value to administrators and alumni. Eco promised that the vacant space would be turned into a park that Cebu had not seen yet. The land bore witness to the formation of young men. They chose the priestly vocation.
Now, St. John XXIII Chapel stands as a place of worship. It is located near 23 Minore Park on Cardinal Rosales Avenue. It serves as a place for prayer and reflection in the heart of Cebu City.
The chapel and the park are physical reminders of the past. They are places where the community comes together. They represent the blend of spiritual and communal life in Cebu. The chapel is a place where one can find solace. It is in the middle of a busy urban environment. St. John XXIII Chapel stands as a beacon of faith. It is a tribute to the enduring legacy of service and spirituality.
