“Imagine the Ashanti Kingdom without the echoes of hymns and the foundation of faith.” That void never materialized thanks to places like St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in Kumasi. Today we stand before this church a testament to over a century of Catholic presence and impact in the Ashanti region.
The story of St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church begins long before its physical structure took shape. The seeds were sown in 1882 with the arrival of Father Auguste Moreau a missionary of the Society of African Missions SMA. He journeyed to Kumasi with a vision to bring the Gospel to the Ashanti Kingdom.
Father Moreau’s visit marked the start of Catholic evangelization in Ashanti. It paved the way for the establishment of a resident Catholic station in Kumasi in 1910. Fathers Joseph Muller and Alfred Laurent both from the SMA played pivotal roles in nurturing the burgeoning Catholic community.
The early SMA missionaries worked tirelessly to build churches schools and health institutions. Their efforts touched many lives and left an indelible mark on Ashanti society. The first Catholic Bishop of Kumasi Hubert Paulissen was instrumental in establishing schools such as Opoku Ware School and St. Louis Secondary School. These institutions continue to shape the minds of young people today.
From Kumasi the Catholic Church expanded into other towns and villages in Ashanti. It also reached Ahafo Bono Bono East and parts of the Eastern Region of Ghana. The growth of the church is a testament to the dedication of the missionaries and the warm reception of the Ashanti people.
In 1929 the first church in Kumasi was blessed marking a significant milestone for the Catholic community. Then in 1951 Kumasi hosted the First National Eucharistic Congress a major event that brought Catholics from across the country together. Later in 1961 Joseph Essuah became bishop of Kumasi.
The legacy of the SMA Fathers continues to inspire. Their missionary spirit lives on in the many Ghanaians who have joined the SMA. Emeritus Archbishop Peter Akwesi Sarpong is an honorary member of the SMA and a shining example of Ashanti leadership within the church. St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church stands as a symbol of faith education and community development in Kumasi. It reminds us of the sacrifices and triumphs of those who came before us. It calls us to continue their work of spreading the Gospel and serving humanity.
