Built in 1908, St John the Baptist Catholic Church is a testament to the enduring faith of Brisbane’s early settlers. Imagine a time when Enoggera was not the bustling suburb we know today, but a scattering of farms and bushland. Reaching the city required a long journey by horse-drawn vehicles. It was in this challenging environment that the Catholic community dreamt of having their own place of worship. Before St John the Baptist Catholic Church graced this site, parishioners would trek for miles, often on foot, to attend Mass at St. Stephen’s in the city or St. Brigid’s in Red Hill. The seed for the church was sown in 1901 when Archbishop Dunne established a Sunday School in a private home in Alderley. It was a small act of faith, but it paved the way for something greater. In 1908, after much fundraising and fueled by the generosity of parishioners like Mrs A. Clugston who donated a portion of the land, their dream became a reality. St John the Baptist Catholic Church, a modest yet beautiful structure designed in the Federation Gothic style, opened its doors. Today, the original brick church stands as a powerful reminder of the community’s commitment to their faith. It reflects not just a change in architectural styles over the years but also the evolution of Enoggera itself – from a quiet outpost to a thriving part of Brisbane.
