Imagine Houston’s Third Ward in August 1899. A small group of African Americans gathers. They are led by the Rev. Hilliard R. Johnson. This is the humble beginning of St. John Missionary Baptist Church.

Today, we stand before the St. John Missionary Baptist Church Plaque. It commemorates this church’s rich history. The plaque tells a story of faith community and growth.

Rev. Johnson served as pastor during two periods. The first one was from 1899 to 1901. The second one was from 1904 to 1924. He introduced innovative practices. These included two morning services spring revivals and baptisms in Brays Bayou.

By 1920 the congregation had grown significantly. They constructed a brick building. This building was located on Dowling Street near McGowan Avenue. The church continued to expand its influence.

The Rev. Sanderson A. Pleasants Jr. took over in 1925. He served until 1953. He established many organizations. These included a Home Mission Department and a Silent Department Deaf Ministry. He also started a Prison Ministry a church band and a radio group.

By 1948 St. John Missionary Baptist Church boasted over 5000 members. They needed a larger sanctuary. In 1950 a new building was completed. It featured a classical revival design. Colossal columns symbolized the church’s spiritual strength. By 1953 it was among the largest African American churches in the country.

From 1953 to 1983, the Rev. Marshall M. Malone led the church. A weekly radio bible class was broadcast. In 1963, the M. M. Malone chapel and educational building were added.

St. John Missionary Baptist Church played a crucial role during the Civil Rights era. In 1958, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at the Erma Hughes Business College commencement held here. In 1965, the church hosted the National Baptist Convention of America. It was the first religious event at Houston’s Astrodome.
