Did you know that St John Mar Thoma Church in Queens Village has a fascinating history? Standing before this vibrant house of worship you can almost feel the echoes of its past. St John’s Mar Thoma Church is a cornerstone of the Mar Thoma community in New York City. It’s a parish within the North American Diocese of the Mar Thoma Church tracing its roots back to Thiruvella Kerala India.
The church’s story begins in 1990. It started humbly with around 17 families. These families formed a prayer group. They were devout Mar Thoma immigrants from Kerala. They worshipped with great zeal in sister parishes. Their faith and dedication laid the groundwork for St John’s. The steady growth of the Mar Thoma community in the area necessitated the formation of a new parish.
Officially established on December 23 1990 St John’s Mar Thoma Church gained momentum. Its membership expanded rapidly. By the end of 1991 it boasted 65 families. The following year saw this number rise to 80 families. The church was fortunate to have Reverend Oommen George its first vicar. He later became the Right Reverend Dr Thomas Mar Theethos Episcopa. Subsequent vicars continued to guide the congregation. Reverend Dr PG George Reverend Thomas Alexander and Reverend Thomas Easow each played a significant role in the church’s growth.
A significant milestone arrived in 1993. The church purchased its current building and parsonage. It had previously used the building since 1990. The building previously belonged to the United Methodist Church. The dedication service was a momentous occasion. It involved His Grace Most Reverend Dr Philipose Mar Chrysostom Marthoma Valiya Metropolitan. The Right Reverend Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Episcopa also attended.
Further growth led to the construction of a new sanctuary. This was consecrated on March 31 2012. The Most Reverend Dr Joseph Marthoma Metropolitan and the Diocesan Episcopa Right Reverend Dr Geevarghese Mar Theodosius officiated. The church continues to thrive. Today St John’s Mar Thoma Church comprises 243 families. It is a testament to the faith and dedication of its members.
