Whispers of history echo within these ancient walls. St Johannis stands before you a testament to time’s passage. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living narrative.

St Johannis in Brandenburg an der Havel began its life not as the grand structure we see today but as a humble Franciscan monastery church. Around 1240 it rose on the banks of the Havel River. The Franciscan monks had moved here from Ziesar escaping unrest. They brought with them the body of Helias a revered Ziesar priest. He was buried in their new Brandenburg church clad in a Franciscan habit before the altar of St John the Baptist.

The present structure however evolved through centuries of additions and alterations. Construction began in 1411 starting traditionally from the choir. The slender church tower a striking addition was built between 1460 and 1469. It’s capped with a gently curving dome. Note the unique single nave on the north side. Until 1985 this served the congregation for worship.

St Johannis held a significant place in the Franciscan order. In 1271 it hosted a provincial chapter of the Saxon Franciscan province. By 1274 it was the center of a custody a subdivision of the province. The monastery’s influence extended to convents in Berlin Frankfurt an der Oder Kyritz Gransee Stendal and Salzwedel. In 1428 St Johannis was the first Saxon monastery to embrace the stricter Observant branch of the Franciscan order. This emphasized poverty and careful financial management.

The Reformation brought change. In 1544 Elector Joachim II dissolved the monastery. The city of Brandenburg cleverly secured the buildings for use as a hospital. Interestingly remaining Franciscan monks were allowed to live out their lives there. The last record of Franciscans in Brandenburg dates to 1570. The city then fully took over the monastery.

On October 3 1687 the French-Reformed community received St Johannis as their church. Before that beginning December 16 1685 they used the Nikolaikirche. In 1835 the French and German Reformed communities merged continuing to use St Johannis. A brewery even operated within the monastery walls during the 19th century. But in 1865 the last monastery buildings were demolished. A school the Saldria replaced the demolished refectory. Sadly a World War II bomb destroyed this school killing teachers and a student. A memorial stone stands now a poignant reminder.

A British air raid during World War II damaged St Johannis severely. The west nave was completely destroyed. The roof over the choir collapsed in 1985. Plans to demolish the ruined church existed in the late 1980s but were thwarted by political changes. Extensive restoration financed largely by the Urban Monument Protection program prepared St Johannis for the 2015 Federal Horticultural Show. It now serves as an event venue. Since Easter Sunday 2016 the church has been used again for services by the Protestant Reformed community.

Look closely. You’ll see exquisite detail in the brickwork. The unrestored interior hints at the church’s history. Recently discovered medieval wall paintings in the choir’s niches illustrate a coronation or blessing of Mary and a Last Judgment scene. The unique rose window above the northwest portal is another remarkable feature.

St Johannis whispers stories of faith resilience and the enduring power of history. It stands not as a relic of the past but as a vibrant reminder of Brandenburg an der Havel’s rich heritage.
