Whispers of history linger within St James’s Church. This unassuming church in Cowley Oxford holds centuries of stories. Its very stones bear witness to the ebb and flow of time.

St James’s Church stands proudly. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith in Oxford. The earliest roots reach back to a Saxon settlement. Imagine Saxon raiders settling in Cufa’s Wood. Their presence predates even St Birinus’s arrival in 635 AD. The present church may well stand on the site of a small Saxon church. That’s quite something to consider.

The Norman conquest brought significant change. The main body of the church as we see it today dates from about 1130 AD. It was dedicated to St James the Apostle. Cowley then became part of Bishop Odo of Bayeux’s estates. He later passed it to Norman governors Roger D’lvry and Robert D’Oilly. They were busy building Oxford Castle and its church dedicated to St George. Interestingly St George’s and its endowments including Cowley were later given to Osney Abbey. St James’s Church therefore has a long and complex history entwined with powerful figures.

The Norman church is architecturally simpler than nearby St Mary’s Church in Iffley. It does however possess intriguing features. One early writer described it as a long barn-like structure. It even featured a stone bench running along the outer walls. Those were simpler times.

The church wasn’t static. As Cowley industrialized the congregation grew. Between 1862 and 1865 it underwent a near-total rebuild by the architect G E Street. The 19th century brought further change. A 19th-century organ found its home here. It was relocated from Carfax church in 1896. It was even repainted in a gold and red medieval colour scheme. It’s a striking piece.

Modern renovations continue to ensure St James’s Church thrives. The addition of toilets in 2021 reflects its continued use for community activities. Even today the Norman columns at the chancel arch retain their original paint. Spirals adorn one column. Lozenges decorate the other. This is a unique surviving illustration of early interior decoration. St James’s Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to history faith and community in Oxford. It truly is a place to pause. Reflect on the past and embrace the present.
