St. James Anglican Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the Anglican presence in this region. The Anglican Church of Tanzania has a rich history, beginning in 1884 with the Diocese of Eastern Equatorial Africa. This vast diocese included Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. James Hannington was its first bishop.

Missionary work was already underway. The Universities’ Mission to Central Africa began its work in 1864. The Church Missionary Society arrived in 1878. Mpwapwa became an early center for these activities.

In 1892, the Diocese of Zanzibar was established separately. It grew independently from the Diocese of Eastern Equatorial Africa. Zanzibar embraced a more Anglo-Catholic style of Anglicanism. Mainland Tanzania was largely influenced by evangelical missionaries. The two regions united when the Province of East Africa was formed.

The Diocese of Eastern Equatorial Africa was divided in 1898. The new Diocese of Mombasa covered Kenya and northern Tanzania. The remaining area formed the Church of Uganda. In 1927, another shift occurred. Northern and central Tanzania became the Diocese of Central Tanganyika. Its see was located in Dodoma. George “Jerry” Chambers was consecrated as its first bishop in 1927.

Significant milestones followed. In 1955, Yohana Omari from Tanganyika was consecrated as assistant bishop in Uganda. Geoffrey Fisher, the Archbishop of Canterbury, performed the ceremony. Omari was among the first African bishops in the region. In 1964, John Sepeku became bishop of the new Diocese of Dar es Salaam.

The Province of East Africa was established in 1960. It included both Kenya and Tanzania. Leonard Beecher served as its first archbishop. A decade later, in 1970, the province split. Tanzania and Kenya formed their own separate provinces. John Sepeku became the first archbishop of the new province of Tanzania.

Today, the Anglican Church of Tanzania has about 2.5 million members. These members actively participate in various organizations. The Tanzania Anglican Youth Organization and the Mothers’ Union foster community. St. John’s University of Tanzania in Dodoma provides education.
