Whispers of Roman gods still linger here. This is St Jakobus in Gersthofen a town near Augsburg. More than just a church St Jakobus holds centuries of history. Its foundations bear witness to a Roman Mercury sanctuary. Imagine Roman travelers stopping here. They offered sacrifices to the gods. This was a place of rest and worship on the ancient Via Claudia.

The Roman altar now resides in Augsburg’s Roman Museum. A fascinating piece of history. The church’s story goes further back. It might even stand on a former Celtic sacred site. A blend of cultures and beliefs. This site has always held spiritual significance.

Over time a wooden church replaced the Roman shrine. Then a stone church arose in the Romanesque or early Gothic style. Around 1506 records first mention St Jakobus as the patron saint. This was likely earlier possibly in the 10th century. The Augsburg Cathedral Chapter held the patronage rights.

The church underwent many changes. Expansions renovations additions. The 19th century saw a new church built. This was designed by Georg von Stengel. Much of the old church was demolished. Only the old tower remained. The new St Jakobus opened in 1864. It’s a beautiful example of the Neuromanik style.

The church was not without troubles. In 1917 the bells were taken for war. Four of them became cannon fodder. In 1944. the church was altered. The west tower was replaced. Later the interior was painted. Then repainted again. A constant evolution. The church has grown with Gersthofen.

Today St Jakobus stands proudly. A testament to faith resilience and history. It continues its ministry in the community. A landmark combining Roman and medieval heritage. This church is part of the Gersthofen parish community. It continues to serve its community for centuries.
