Did the towering spire of St. Gregory’s ever seem to pierce the heavens themselves? St. Gregory’s Church stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of Glasgow’s history. It replaced a humble chapel built in 1809 by Father Augustine Birdsall. The church we see today began its life in 1854. It was designed by the renowned architect Charles Hansom. The chancel first opened its doors in 1857. The iconic tower and spire were completed a bit later in 1876. The nave, connecting these sections, was also constructed at this time. The church was finally consecrated in 1877. St. Gregory’s houses breathtaking stained glass windows by John Hardman Studios. Six of these windows are original, dating back to the church’s earliest days. Other windows were added between 1857 and 1900. The artistry continues with intricate stone carvings. Admire the reredos behind the High Altar, the pulpit front, the altar fronts, and the Stations of the Cross. The window behind the High Altar depicts the Assumption and Coronation of Mary. Two roundels below show the Annunciation and the Nativity. The High Altar’s front features Christ with the chalice and Sacred Host. Angelic musicians adorn the surrounding panels. The reredos displays the four Evangelists with their symbols. St. Peter and St. Paul stand in adoration. Several life-sized statues grace the Sanctuary. One notable piece is a beautiful statue of Our Lady. This statue was crafted by an artist in Munich. St. Gregory’s isn’t just a building. It’s a living story etched in stone and glass, whispering tales of faith and artistry across the ages.
