“A testament to faith” Father Raphael Minassian once declared. That’s the essence of St. Gregory Armenian Catholic Church in Glendale California. Right before you stands a magnificent structure a beacon of Armenian heritage and spirituality.

St Gregory Armenian Catholic Church wasn’t built overnight. It’s a story of vision dedication and unwavering faith. In 1989 Father Raphael Minassian was appointed to a mission in Los Angeles. His goal was ambitious: to establish a second Armenian Catholic parish. This wasn’t just about a new building. It was about creating a spiritual home for the growing Armenian community.

The journey began in 1997. Father Raphael bought a Lutheran church. He and Father Dajad Yardemian handcrafted an Armenian-style altar. They meticulously renovated the building transforming it into a sacred space. The official inauguration of St Gregory Armenian Catholic Church took place in 1998.

But Father Raphael’s vision extended beyond renovation. He wanted a new church a complex for an auxiliary bishop. In 1999 demolition began. The old church was torn down. A new one was built in traditional Armenian style. It was two years of intense labor. The result is stunning.

The cornerstone of St Gregory Armenian Catholic Church was laid on August 15 1999. The consecration ceremony took place on March 18 2001. Bishop Manuel Batakian officiated. The church boasts a monument commemorating 17 centuries of Armenian Christianity. It’s adorned with the names of countless benefactors. The dedication was immense. Father Raphael was awarded the title of Monsignor. He emphasized that St Gregory Armenian Catholic Church belonged to all Armenians regardless of denomination.

The story of St Gregory Armenian Catholic Church doesn’t end there. Father Raphael’s work continued with the construction of the parish hall and other facilities. He also started a cultural magazine Avedaper. He even established a chamber orchestra. The church blossomed into a thriving community center.

Following Father Raphael’s departure other priests continued his work. They oversaw further renovations including the completion of the underground hall. They added Khatchkars to the courtyard. They introduced English-Armenian Mass. St Gregory Armenian Catholic Church remains a vibrant place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring faith and rich cultural heritage of the Armenian community. It is a place where history and faith intertwine. A true reflection of devotion. A place of quiet contemplation and joyous celebration. It’s a story of faith that continues to unfold.
