A majestic rose window greets you at St Gottfried. Its central panel depicts the Virgin Mary. Seven smaller circles surround it each hinting at a moment in Mary’s life.
Welcome to St Gottfried a Roman Catholic parish church in Munster. Founded in 1952 this church stands near St Clemens Hospital. Its namesake is Gottfried von Cappenberg a Westphalian nobleman who lived from 1097 to 1127. The cornerstone was laid that same year. Architect Hans Dinnendahl designed this striking building. It was consecrated in 1953.
Construction continued. The tower was completed in 1958. It houses a five-bell chime. The Marienkapelle a side chapel was expanded in 1963. The crypt was finished in 1974. The altar area underwent a significant redesign in 2002. This sparked a lengthy legal battle. The debate centered on the balance between copyright law and the church’s autonomy. One of Dinnendahl’s heirs sued demanding the church revert the alterations. The Federal Court of Justice ultimately ruled in favor of the church. They prioritized the church’s right to adapt its space to evolving liturgical practices.
St Gottfried’s interior is a single nave with a semi-circular choir. The tower sits to the west of the main structure. The Marienkapelle is on the south side. A large organ and choir loft occupy the west end partially obscuring the rose window. The church has no pillars. Its walls are whitewashed brick. Uniform arched windows line the upper section of the walls. A dark brown wooden ceiling adds warmth to the space.
The altar area is a fascinating example of layers of history. An original altar arrangement exists. This is a stepped semi-circular structure enclosed by a wall. A granite screen displays a crucifixion group sculpted by Dinnendahl himself. Christ is shown without a crown of thorns. Mary and John flank him. In 2002 the original altar was reduced in size and moved to a new altar island closer to the congregation.
The five choir windows are also figural. The central window shows Christ enthroned. Angels flanking him one holds a censer the other a trumpet.
The church also has a crypt. It was developed into a weekday chapel between 1973 and 1974. Lothar Simon built the organ in 1978. It has 28 stops on two manuals and pedals. The trumpet of the main work is visibly positioned on the case.
St Gottfried’s story is one of faith perseverance and adaptation. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. It reflects the evolving nature of worship. It also showcases the creative genius of Hans Dinnendahl.
