Whispers of faith echo through the hallowed halls of St. Franziskus. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Franciscan order in Dortmund. St. Franziskus, often called the Franziskanerkirche, stands proudly on Franziskanerstraße. It represents a resurgence of Catholicism in the city after the Reformation. The original Franciscan monastery in Dortmund dates back to the 13th century. It thrived for centuries, weathering fires and religious disputes. Imagine the year 1604. The city is in turmoil. The monastery’s guardian, Johannes Pelcking, a fervent believer in witch hunts, is twice expelled from Dortmund after clashes with the townspeople. He later becomes a bishop, pursuing a vigorous campaign of re-Catholicization. The original monastery met its end in 1805, a casualty of secularization. Yet, the Franciscan spirit would not be extinguished. The industrial revolution brought an influx of Catholic workers to Dortmund. The existing Propsteikirche struggled to accommodate the growing congregation. In 1895, Franciscan brothers from the Saxonia province answered the call, establishing a new presence in the city. Initially, they held services in a small chapel on Hamburger Straße. But the need for a larger space was clear. In 1898, construction began on the St. Franziskus church we see today. The architect, Johannes Franziskus Klomp, designed a magnificent neo-Gothic basilica. The church was consecrated in 1902, a beacon of faith for the burgeoning Catholic community. The church’s history continued through turbulent times. St. Franziskus suffered damage during World War II bombings. But like the Franciscan spirit itself, it persevered, reopening for services on Christmas 1949. Today, St. Franziskus is more than just a place of worship. It houses the Bruder-Jordan-Werk, providing meals for the homeless and needy. It also houses a touching reminder of Bruder Jordan Mai, a beloved Franciscan who served as the monastery’s porter. His remains, initially buried in the Ostfriedhof, were moved to the church in 1950 in a ceremony attended by nearly 100,000 people. His cause for beatification is ongoing. St. Franziskus stands as a symbol of resilience. It’s a reminder that faith, like the phoenix, can rise from the ashes, stronger and more vibrant than before.
