The cornerstone a symbol of hope. St Francis Xavier Church stands before you. Its bluish-gray granite a testament to time. This wasn’t always so.

St Francis Xavier Church in Manhattan’s Flatiron District boasts a rich history. It wasn’t the first church on this very spot. The original church founded in 1851 by Fordham Jesuits met a tragic end. Panic during mass resulted in seven deaths in 1877. The building was torn down.

The current church a masterpiece of Neo-baroque architecture. Irish-born architect Patrick Charles Keely designed it. Its construction took four years. It opened in 1882. The beautiful stained-glass windows are the work of the Morgan brothers. They often collaborated with Keely. Archbishop Michael Corrigan dedicated the church.

A significant restoration project took place from 2001 to 2010. EverGreene Architectural Arts oversaw the meticulous work. They preserved the church’s stunning features. The sanctuary was reconfigured. A new baptismal pool was added.

Imagine the countless prayers whispered within these walls. Picture the generations who have sought solace and community here. Feel the weight of history beneath your feet. St Francis Xavier Church. More than just a building. It is a living testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of the community it serves. A place of quiet reflection a place of joyous celebration a place of enduring hope. This is St Francis Xavier Church.
