St. Francis Missionary Baptist Church

Wasn’t St Francis D’Assisi Church originally Polish? That’s right in front of us. It’s a stunning example of Italian Renaissance architecture. It wasn’t always a Catholic church. The building’s history is captivating. It started in 1890. A small combined church and school was constructed. The first mass was held on Easter Sunday of that year. This initial structure could seat 700. The parish grew rapidly. Soon a much larger church was needed. So in 1903 construction began on what stands before us. This magnificent structure cost $150000. It could now accommodate 1700 worshippers. This new church was completed and dedicated in 1905. Bishop John Foley presided over the ceremony. Ten thousand people attended the dedication. The church features intricate carvings and ornate columns. Symbols of Polish nationalism are prominently displayed. These reflect the history of the Polish community in Detroit. The interior is equally impressive. The vaulted ceiling is adorned with stained glass windows. These windows showcase scenes from the life of the Blessed Mother. They were made by the Detroit Stained Glass Works a company active from 1861 to 1970. The main altar depicts St Francis assisting the crucified Christ. Many other saints are also represented in the church’s artwork. Throughout its history St Francis D’Assisi Church has been a beacon for the community. It has served as a place of worship and a center for social gatherings. The church has persevered. It has faced many challenges including changing demographics.
