Contemplate this: St Francis Church stands as a testament to community and faith. It opened its doors in 1931. The church was built to serve Oxford’s growing population. People lived far from the Parish of St James on Beauchamp Lane.
Lord Nuffield gifted the site in 1929. He laid the foundation stone. Lawrence Dale was the architect. His plans were grand. He envisioned a church, hall, and priest’s hall. The full plan was too ambitious to implement quickly. A church hall would be built first. It would convert to a church on weekends. A screened sanctuary was planned too. This space would host weekday services. It would also be a space for prayers. The complete vision never materialized. The original plans remain at the church.
St Francis Church has unique features. Painted beams depict the life of St Francis. Mr. L Davenport decorated one beam elaborately. He was an instructor at the Oxford School of Arts and Crafts. It represents the “Hymn of Creation”. A Hawkesley designed a hanging cross. He was a member of DesRCC. It symbolizes the world’s fragmentation. This is drawn together in the Cross of Christ.
The first of four Oxford churches, St Francis of Assisi was designed by T Laurence Dale. This happened between 1930 and 1931. Morris Motors provided the site. It served as a temporary daughter church of St James. The Foundation Stone was laid on 11 September 1930. It became a permanent church and was dedicated in 1962. St Francis is a simple building. It features a small chancel. The reredos screen stands behind the high altar. It is a fine example of Murano glass and marble artwork.
