The yellow facade gleams. It’s the Chapel of St Francis Xavier. A charming building in Coloane Village. It isn’t just a pretty face though.

This unassuming chapel holds a piece of Asia’s Christian history. Built in 1928 it boasts a Baroque style. It shares architectural features with Macau’s grander churches. Notice its location behind the 1910 anti-pirate victory monument.

For years the Chapel of St Francis Xavier housed priceless relics. These included a bone from St Francis Xavier’s arm. The saint himself founded the Jesuit mission in Asia. He even journeyed to the Chinese coast after his Japanese mission. The chapel also held the remains of Japanese Christians and priests. These martyrs were crucified in Nagasaki in 1597. Their sacrifice cemented the chapel’s importance in Christian Asian history.

Sadly these relics have since been moved. In 1996 they found a new home. They are now respectfully interred at the Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt. This museum sits behind the Ruins of St Paul’s Church. The arm bone of St Francis Xavier now resides in St Joseph’s Seminary and Church.

Despite the relocation of its sacred contents the Chapel of St Francis Xavier remains significant. It’s a beautiful landmark. It’s also a poignant reminder of Macau’s rich religious past. The chapel is a symbol of Coloane. Its vibrant yellow color stands out amongst the quaint village buildings. Take a moment to appreciate its quiet beauty. It’s a place where history whispers. And faith remains.
