St. Dorothy Church: A place where faith blooms like a bouquet of roses. St. Dorothy Church, a beacon of Catholicism in Drexel Hill, Philadelphia, has a story as vibrant and colorful as the roses for which it’s named.

Imagine yourself standing before the impressive church, its brick facade reaching towards the sky. This is a place where history and faith intertwine. St. Dorothy School, founded in 1950 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, has played a pivotal role in the community.

For years, these dedicated sisters commuted daily from Sacred Heart Convent in Manoa to teach the first pupils, utilizing space within the neighboring Saint Bernadette Parish School. But the growth of the community soon demanded its own dedicated space. The dedication ceremony of the two-story school building by Bishop Hugh Lamb in 1950 was a momentous occasion, marking the beginning of St. Dorothy’s educational legacy. With an initial enrollment of 234 elementary pupils, the school expanded to three stories in 1953, standing as a testament to the commitment of the sisters and the community.

Though the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary left in 1996, their influence remains. Today, St. Dorothy School continues to offer a quality education in a nurturing environment, instilling in its students positive Catholic values. The school operates from three buildings, each serving an essential purpose. From the main building’s sixteen classrooms to the lower level’s gymnasium, where assemblies and theatrical productions take place, St. Dorothy offers a well-rounded experience.

But it’s not just the school that thrives here. St. Dorothy Church itself stands as a symbol of faith and resilience, serving 2,250 families. The church features accessible entrances and innovative assistive listening devices. Visitors can find handicap-accessible pews, allowing everyone to participate fully in the blessings of worship.

St. Dorothy Church is a place where faith blossoms, where children learn to embrace their values, and where a community comes together to celebrate life’s moments, big and small.
