A colossal concrete cone pierces the Berlin sky. This is St Dominicus church in Gropiusstadt. It’s not your typical church.

St Dominicus is a testament to post-war modern architecture. It stands proudly in the Lipschitzallee. Built between 1975 and 1977 it’s a striking example of the architectural style of the post-war era. The church and its community center built in 1969 are protected historical monuments.

The need for a Catholic church in Gropiusstadt was evident. Eleven percent of the Gropiusstadt’s population was Catholic. By 1975 fifty thousand people moved into eighteen thousand five hundred new apartments. Before the church was built services were held in a laundry room. Later services were held in a school hallway. Then the community center’s hall was used. The church was finally consecrated on April 30 1977. This modern marvel reflects the ideals of the Second Vatican Council. It aimed for a complete spatial and liturgical design. The church design is unique. Similar designs were also used in other Berlin churches that year. Berliners nicknamed these churches ‘St Melitta’ because of the shape of their domes.

The building’s exterior is striking. The main structure is topped with a truncated cone made of 24 supports. The cone’s surface is covered in aluminum above a band of windows. The church sits on a square base. One wall is entirely glass. The other walls are made of red-brown bricks left unplastered.

Inside St Dominicus is awe-inspiring. The dome dominates the interior space. The altar is placed beneath the dome’s skylight. Circular pews surround the altar. The church’s fixtures are works of art. The altar and baptismal font are carved from shell limestone. The ambo and the reliquary of the patron saint Dominicus are made of bronze. A freestanding wall with a double-sided tabernacle stands behind the altar. A weekday chapel was tucked behind this. The church even has a pipe organ with two manuals a pedal and 18 stops. It was installed in 1988.

The bell tower is made of prefabricated concrete. A stylized cross tops it. The bell tower houses a bronze bell cast in 1976. It weighs 294 kg and has the inscription ‘CONCORDIA ET PAX’.

St Dominicus isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of community resilience. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of a sprawling modern city faith endures. It’s a warm heart in the middle of a cold concrete landscape. St Dominicus is more than just a church. It’s a small volcano of faith. It’s a testament to faith’s enduring warmth in Gropiusstadt.
