Did you know that St. Conval’s RC Church has been a spiritual beacon in Pollok Glasgow since 1949? Its story is one of rapid growth and a community’s unwavering dedication. Let’s delve into the history of this sacred place right here.
St. Conval’s began as a small parish. The first Mass was celebrated on July 30 1949. Almost immediately the church faced a challenge. It needed to accommodate the ever-growing number of people attending Mass.
By 1952 St. Conval’s had grown exponentially. Five Sunday Masses increased to seven. This was thanks to the efforts of Father Conway and the “new” Father Louis Knight.
The parish recognized the need for a larger more permanent building. They started a New Building Fund. Active social life revenue supplemented this fund. In April 1951 Father Bobby O’Kane replaced the sick Father Louis Knight. Then Father Pat Henry arrived in August. Father Ned Molumby succeeded Father Conway in October 1952 and Father Bill McDonald replaced Father O’Kane.
Just five years after its birth St. Conval’s took a significant step. In April 1954 the site for a new church was blessed. The first sod was turned. The foundation stone was laid on September 29. The presbytery was occupied on November 30 1954. Finally on March 11 1956 the new St. Conval’s church was solemnly opened. Archbishop Donald Campbell officiated.
The church building itself is more recent. It was built between 1953 and 1956. This makes it an example of modern design heritage.
The church is named after Saint Conval. He was an early missionary in Scotland. St. Conval’s father was an Irish king. Conval left his heritage behind. He came to Scotland to spread the Gospel. He landed near Inchinnan. Conval became a priest and eventually an Archdeacon under Kentigern. Kentigern used Glasgow as his headquarters. He sent Conval to preach in the regions south of the River Clyde. Conval faced opposition from Druids. He built a church on a Druid mound at Rutherglen. He founded a monastery in Inchinnan. Many miracles are attributed to him there.
Today St. Conval’s continues to be a vibrant parish. It offers several services. These include weekday and Sunday Masses. Confession is available after each Mass. The Syro-Malabar Mission of St. Thomas also holds liturgies here.
St. Conval’s also hosts various groups and activities. There is a Fatima Prayer group. There are dance classes and karate. St. Conval’s hall is used by several groups. These include a Free Breakfast Club and an After School Care program.
