A marvel of resilience stands before you. This is St Columba’s Catholic Church. It wasn’t built in a day. Oh no. Its story is woven with threads of faith perseverance and wartime grit.

St Columba’s in Glasgow isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to community spirit. It rose during World War II. That alone makes it remarkable. Imagine the challenges. Materials were scarce. Construction was precarious. Yet this magnificent building took shape.

The story began in 1937. Father Denis Flynn had a vision. He wanted a new Catholic church in Woodside. He applied for permission to build. Then came the 1938 Empire Exhibition. It showcased Jack Coia’s stunning Catholic Pavilion. Coia was subsequently commissioned to design St Columba’s. The design? Italian Romanesque. It’s breathtaking.

Construction began. Sadly World War II interrupted. The Blitz threatened everything. Yet the local community rallied. They wouldn’t let their church fall. Each family contributed sixpence for each brick used. It was a true collective effort. This ensured the church’s completion in 1941. St Columba’s became the only church built in Glasgow during the war. A symbol of hope amidst the devastation.

The church’s beauty is undeniable. Its west front boasts a magnificent cross-shaped window. Inside are the Stations of the Cross. These painted panels came from Coia’s Catholic Pavilion. They survived the war. They’re a beautiful reminder of the past. A marble reredos and a carved crucifix by Benno Schotz adorn the sanctuary. Every detail speaks of faith artistry and resilience.

St Columba’s hasn’t just endured. It has thrived. The Dominican Order served the parish for years. Today the Blessed Sacrament Fathers continue that legacy. Masses are held regularly. The church remains a vibrant hub for the community.

St Columba’s stands as a testament to the power of faith. Its history is one of unwavering determination. It’s a story of a community that refused to let war extinguish its hope. It’s a story worth telling and cherishing. And it’s a story you can now carry with you. Leaving you in awe of its beauty and strength. St Columba’s a true Glasgow gem.
