A humble beginning. That’s how the story of St Barbara in Dortmund started. It wasn’t built in a single grand gesture. It was the product of community need and generosity.

St Barbara Church in Dortmund’s Eving district stands as a testament to the unwavering faith of miners. It’s more than just a church. It’s a symbol of their devotion and resilience. For generations it has been their spiritual home. It’s the mother church of Eving.

The story begins in 1891. Miners from the Minister Stein and Fürst Hardenberg collieries needed a church. The Gelsenkirchener Bergbau AG mining company stepped up. They donated land and money. This enabled the construction of a small mission church. It was dedicated to Saint Barbara the patron saint of miners. Think of it a small chapel first. A modest beginning for a church with a great future.

However this little church soon proved too small. The congregation grew. More miners came to worship. They needed a bigger place to pray. They needed more space.

So they built a new church. This new St Barbara church was grander. This time it was built in the impressive neo-Gothic style. The new church was also consecrated to Saint Barbara. The construction was completed and the new church was dedicated on September 20 1906. The new structure was a far cry from the modest beginnings of 1891. It stood as a symbol of growth and enduring faith.

Today St Barbara’s continues to be a place of worship. It’s a reminder of the strong community built around the mines. It’s a proud landmark in Eving. It’s a place where miners’ families found solace and strength. It was a beacon of hope for those who worked underground. And it remains a powerful reminder of the faith that sustained them. The legacy of St Barbara is not just stone and mortar. It’s the living faith of a community. A legacy that continues to this day.
