A wave of nostalgia washes over you. You stand before the St Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church. Its story unfolds like a centuries-old tapestry woven with faith resilience and the enduring spirit of the Serbian people.
The church’s roots stretch back to the earliest days of Christianity in the Balkans. Serbian Orthodox believers faced persecution for centuries. Their faith endured under Ottoman rule and the horrors of two World Wars. This small church in Salt Lake City is a testament to their enduring spirit.
In the early 1900s Serbian immigrants arrived in Utah. They established a parish in Midvale dedicated to St Archangel Michael. Sadly it eventually dissolved. Many years later a new wave of immigrants re-established the St Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church in 1997.
After nearly a decade of hard work the parish purchased a building. They created a place for worship cultural events and community gatherings. A remarkable woman named Sofia Piedmont Lovrich played a pivotal role. At 98 years old she generously bequeathed a substantial sum. This helped the church pay off its mortgage. It marked a new chapter in its history.
Today approximately 100 Serbian families in Utah find solace and community within these walls. The St Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living monument to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of a community far from home. It stands as a beacon of hope a testament to the rich and turbulent history of the Serbian people. It’s a place where the past present and future intertwine. A place to find peace. A place to find God. A place to feel the enduring presence of the Serbian Orthodox faith.
