The bells of St Antonius-Kirche Oberschöneweide toll a resounding welcome. Their sound echoes across the years. A testament to the unwavering faith of this community.
St Antonius-Kirche is more than just a building. It’s a living history book. Its story begins in late 19th-century Oberschöneweide. A surge of Catholic immigrants arrived from across Germany and even Poland. They yearned for their own church. Initially they worshipped in the Kaiserpavilion in Karlshorst. That was too small. Later they used a fire station. Finally in 1903 they were granted their own curateship.
The dream of a dedicated church took flight. Architect Wilhelm Fahlbusch designed a magnificent structure. Construction began on August 26 1906. Fifteen months later on November 3 1907 the church was consecrated. Fahlbusch also designed the adjacent rectory. It was completed in 1908. The total cost of the project was substantial. The community raised 155000 Marks. That’s around 1.157.000 Euros today.
The St Antonius-Kirche stands as a beacon of Neo-Gothic architecture. Its impressive dimensions are awe-inspiring. It can comfortably hold 1800 people. The building’s striking features include a cruciform design a three-sided choir and a west tower. The tower originally boasted an eight-sided spire. It was later replaced with a simpler cross-gabled roof. Atop sits a cross and a gilded weather vane.
The church bells have a story of their own. Two of the original bronze bells were melted down for war efforts in World War I. Steel replacements were cast in 1924. A third bell cast in bronze was also lost. It was replaced by a steel bell in 1957. In 2023 all the bells were replaced again. They are now cast by the Rincker foundry in Hesse.
World War II brought devastation. Bombs struck the church in 1944. The roof was largely destroyed. Windows shattered. Yet the community rallied. The church was quickly made usable again. Post-war repairs were extensive. In 1962-63 a major renovation occurred incorporating elements of the Second Vatican Council. Artist Georg Nawroth created stunning new altar windows.
St Antonius-Kirche Oberschöneweide’s history is a testament to resilience. The community’s faith shone brightly even in the darkest hours. It continues to serve as a place of worship and community.
