Officially established in 1984, St Anthonys holds the distinction of being the oldest Coptic congregation in the UAE. The church, also known as the Egyptian Orthodox Coptic Church, caters to a diverse congregation, primarily Egyptian with a significant Sudanese presence. Imagine stepping into the grand cathedral that opened in 2007. This impressive structure, covering over 3,334 square meters, was built to accommodate the growing number of worshippers, now between 3,000 and 4,000. The land for St Anthonys was a gift from Sheikh Zayed, a symbol of the UAE’s commitment to religious tolerance. The Coptic Orthodox Church itself traces its roots back to Saint Mark, who founded it around 68 AD. This rich history is reflected in the church’s unique traditions. They celebrate Christmas on January 7th, in line with most Orthodox churches, and observe a 43-day Lent. The air within St Anthonys is filled with the melodies of over 3,000 hymns, each designated for specific festivals like Christmas. Services are a blend of Arabic and Coptic, creating a unique auditory experience. Plans are also underway to introduce English services, reflecting the church’s commitment to inclusivity.
