Imagine this: a relic of St. Anne’s wrist bone journeyed all the way from Rome to Philadelphia. Today we stand before St. Anne Church. It is a testament to faith and community. This church has been a cornerstone of the Fishtown, Port Richmond, and Kensington neighborhoods since 1845.
St. Anne Church’s story is deeply intertwined with the Irish immigrant experience. These immigrants sought a place to worship and build a community. The church quickly became a focal point for their spiritual and social lives.
In 1861 Rev. Hugh McLaughlin showed the parish’s support for the Union during the Civil War. He proudly raised a large American flag facing Lehigh Avenue. Many parishioners enlisted in the war effort. Rev. McLaughlin even organized the remaining men into the Home Guard. The St. Anne Historical Committee identified 53 veterans of the Civil War buried in St. Anne’s Cemetery.
By 1890 St. Anne Parish had grown into one of Philadelphia’s largest and most beautiful churches. It boasted 12000 registered Catholics. The school, established in 1854, educated hundreds of children. The Sisters of St. Joseph taught 900 girls. The Christian Brothers taught 800 boys.
Rev. Thomas Barry brought back a relic of St. Anne from Rome in 1898. This marked a significant moment in the church’s history. The dedication of the Shrine to St. Anne took place in 1899. Parishioners donated gems and precious metals to create a reliquary for the relic.
In 1901 Rev. Matthew Hand became the fifth pastor. This marked the beginning of St. Anne Parish’s Golden Era. Funds were raised for new stained glass windows. Frescoes were retouched. A massive main altar was erected. A mosaic of the Crucifixion formed a striking feature.
The commitment to serving God and country is deeply embedded in St. Anne Parish’s history. During World War II 1375 members of the parish served. The parish continues to be a spiritual home for generations of families.
In 2015 St. Anne Parish celebrated its 170th Anniversary. The celebration was coupled with a tribute to First Responders. A large American flag flew from a fire department ladder truck. This symbolized the parish’s ongoing dedication to the community.
In 2019 the upper church of St. Anne Parish was designated a shrine. It is a shrine of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. This honor recognized the long-standing devotion to St. Anne. The annual novena draws about 2000 people. Many young women attend. They seek St. Anne’s help in finding a good husband.
St. Anne Church stands as a beacon of faith, community, and service. Its rich history and enduring spirit continue to inspire. The church remains a vital part of Philadelphia. It is a testament to the power of faith and the strength of community.
