Has anyone ever noticed the quiet strength of St. Anne’s? Here in Dennistoun, St. Anne’s Church stands as a testament to faith and architectural ingenuity. The parish itself has a rich history, dating back to 1899. Originally serving Glasgow’s East End from a smaller church on David Street in the Gallowgate, the community thrived. Eventually, they outgrew their original space, a common tale for growing congregations. Under the guidance of Archbishop Donald MacKintosh, the school was temporarily used as the church. Imagine attending classes where just days before, Sunday service was held. This paved the way for the magnificent structure we see before us today. The land for St. Anne’s has its own story. It was previously owned by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. They operated a children’s refuge and hostel here. This act of generosity provided the perfect location for the new church, completed in 1933. The architectural design of St. Anne’s is a marvel to behold. Jack Coia, a prominent architect who designed numerous buildings for the Catholic Church, is the mastermind behind this masterpiece. He blended Romanesque and Byzantine Revival styles, creating a truly unique structure. The church’s cruciform shape, formed by semi-circular reinforced concrete portals converging at a central apex, is a striking visual element. It’s no wonder Archbishop Mario Conti referred to St. Anne’s as the “Jewel of the Archdiocese”. Inside, wide-spanning barrel vaults maximize space and brickwork forms the piers and pulpit, adding a touch of rustic charm. The main entrance, adorned with three stone semi-circular arches and Celtic motifs, is a work of art in itself. At the center is a keystone featuring the Madonna and Child, sculpted by Archibald Dawson. St. Anne’s isn’t just a historical landmark. It’s a vibrant, active parish. With multiple Sunday and weekday masses, the church continues to serve the community. So, the next time you pass St. Anne’s, take a moment to appreciate its beauty, its history. Remember the stories it holds, the community it nurtures, and the faith it represents.
