Deep beneath the charming town of Freiberg, the St. Anna Fundgrube whispers tales of a time when silver flowed like a subterranean river. This isn’t just a hole in the ground. It’s a portal to the Middle Ages, a time when the clang of pickaxes and the creak of wooden machinery echoed through these tunnels. The St. Anna Fundgrube is a medieval mine, its first veins of silver tapped sometime between the 12th and 15th centuries. Imagine miners, their faces illuminated by flickering lamps, following the glittering silver ore deep into the earth. The mining technique they employed, called “Strossenbau,” involved extracting ore horizontally on different levels. Right here, near the entrance of the St. Anna Fundgrube, you can see evidence of this early mining method. This cavity, at least 13 meters deep, speaks to the ingenuity and back-breaking labor of those early miners. The full depth of the St. Anna Fundgrube remains a mystery. The lower sections are flooded, and though cave divers have explored its watery depths, they’ve yet to reach the bottom. Another mining technique used in the St. Anna Fundgrube from the 15th century onward was the “Firstenbau” (overhand stoping). Imagine miners chipping away at the ceiling of the tunnel, letting gravity do the work as the ore tumbled down. This was efficient but dangerous. It required constant backfilling or the construction of precarious wooden walkways. The Wolkenburg Mining District, home to the St. Anna Fundgrube, flourished between the 14th and 19th centuries. Silver, lead, and copper were the treasures that drew men into the earth. Today, thanks to the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Altbergbau & Geologie Westsachsen e.V., the St. Anna Fundgrube is open to the public. They’ve not only made this mine accessible but have also established a museum in the historic Bergamtshaus, the old mining authority’s building. There, you can further explore the rich mining history of Freiberg and imagine the lives of those who toiled in the depths of the St. Anna Fundgrube.
