A masterpiece of neoclassical design. That’s St Andrew’s in the Square. Before you stands one of Scotland’s finest classical churches. Built between 1739 and 1756 it’s a testament to Glasgow’s Tobacco Lords. Their wealth and power are etched into every stone.

St Andrew’s in the Square wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a statement. Inspired by London’s St Martin-in-the-Fields it showcased the city’s prosperity. Master Mason Mungo Naismith and architect Allan Dreghorn created a marvel. This Presbyterian church was the first built after the Reformation. It stands as a symbol of a new era.

Imagine the scene in December 1745. Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite army camped here. The church was still under construction. They sheltered within its half-built walls. This is before their ill-fated campaign in England. A chapter in Scottish history unfolds within these very walls.

Then there’s the story of Vincenzo Lunardi. On November 23 1785 he launched a hot air balloon from the churchyard. Thousands watched him soar south-east. He landed much further away in Hawick. What a spectacle that must have been.

St Andrew’s in the Square also witnessed quieter moments. In 1776 Agnes Maclehose Clarinda married here. Her love letters to Robert Burns inspired his poem Ae Fond Kiss. Romantic echoes linger in the very air.

The 19th century brought change. Glasgow expanded westward. St Andrew’s congregation dwindled. Its last religious service was held in June 1993. The building was then acquired by the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust.

This wasn’t the end. A remarkable renovation followed. Victorian additions were removed restoring the church’s original beauty. A basement cafe rehearsal spaces and dressing rooms were created. St Andrew’s in the Square reopened in 2000. It is now Glasgow’s Centre for Scottish Culture. This celebrates Scottish music song and dance. This magnificent building continues to thrive. It is a vital part of Glasgow’s vibrant cultural scene. A true icon of the city.
