In the heart of Honolulu, St Andrew’s Cathedral stands as a testament to a king’s love and a queen’s devotion. St Andrew’s Cathedral’s story begins with tragedy. King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, devout Anglicans, dreamed of a spiritual home for their people. They invited the Anglican Church to Hawaii. They even planned their son’s baptism as the church’s first member. Sadly, young Prince Albert died at just four years old. Queen Emma became the first baptized member instead. The heartbroken king commissioned the cathedral in 1862. He envisioned it as a beacon of faith. He sadly died on St. Andrew’s Day, 1863, before construction even began. His brother, Kamehameha V, honored his memory. He dedicated the cathedral to St. Andrew and laid the cornerstone in 1867. Queen Emma continued her husband’s mission. She traveled to England. She raised funds and commissioned renowned architects William Slater and R.H. Carpenter. She even selected the stone from France. St Andrew’s Cathedral, built in the French Gothic style, was shipped piece by piece from England. It took over twenty years to complete. The first phase opened on Christmas 1886, a year after Queen Emma’s passing. The cathedral finally stood complete. It showcased a stunning stained-glass window depicting European explorers who visited Hawaii. Its Mackintosh Tower, completed in 1912, houses a unique set of eight bells. These bells, cast in 1812, originally belonged to St. Alkmund’s Church in Shrewsbury, England. They were refurbished and inscribed with Hawaiian monarchs’ names before their installation in St Andrew’s Cathedral in 1991. St Andrew’s Cathedral remains an active Episcopal church in Honolulu today. It stands as a poignant reminder of royal vision. It is a symbol of faith born from grief, a testament to enduring love.
