St. Andrew’s Church. A name whispered with reverence for centuries, a beacon of faith standing tall against the tides of time. Right here in Bandra, this grand old church has borne witness to the ebb and flow of history for over 400 years. That’s older than the Taj Mahal, a testament to its enduring legacy. St. Andrew’s Church wasn’t always the imposing structure you see today. Its journey began humbly in 1575, a sanctuary built by Portuguese Jesuits. Imagine the scene back then – a quiet coastal village where the sound of waves crashing against the shore mingled with the hymns of the newly converted Kolis. The resilience of St. Andrew’s is truly remarkable. It withstood a fierce cyclone in 1618 that ripped off its roof and even survived the Maratha invasion of 1739. Its thick walls, a blend of limestone and mortar, stand as a testament to its enduring strength. Look closely at the main altar. It’s crafted from sturdy teakwood, replacing an earlier one devoured by termites. The life-size statue of St. Andrew clutching an X-shaped cross is a story in itself. It’s believed he requested this unique cross, feeling unworthy of dying on the same one as Jesus. In a peculiar twist of fate, two panels from the original pulpit, demolished in 1963, resurfaced in Australia in 1999. A mystery that adds to the allure of St. Andrew’s Church. But perhaps the most fascinating detail lies in a small architectural marvel. Twice a year, on the spring and winter equinoxes, the rising sun’s rays slip through a tiny aperture above the entrance. This beam of light illuminates the tabernacle, a symbolic representation of the divine light shining upon this sacred space. St. Andrew’s Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a confluence of history, faith, and architectural brilliance, a must-visit for anyone seeking to delve into the heart of old Bombay.
