Was it faith or perhaps a touch of homesickness that led those Scottish soldiers to lay the first stones? Here at St Andrew’s Church, the story whispers from the very walls. St Andrew’s Church wasn’t always this serene sanctuary. It was born from a need, a desire for a spiritual home away from home. In May 1852, Reverend Adam Cairns led a delegation to meet Sir John Pakington. Their mission was simple: secure the right to celebrate Presbyterian marriages in Gibraltar. This meeting set the wheels in motion, literally. The foundation stone of St Andrew’s Church was laid on October 6, 1852. Imagine Mrs. Grey, wife of the Captain of the Port, performing the ceremony. The church opened its doors on May 28, 1854. St Andrew’s wasn’t just a church; it was a garrison church, a testament to the strong Scottish military presence in Gibraltar. The original pews, pulpit, and baptismal font still grace the interior. They are a tangible link to those early worshippers. A pipe organ, added in 1905/06, enriches the atmosphere. Look closely at the south wall. Three beautiful stained-glass windows depict St Andrew, Christ, and St Columba. These aren’t the original windows. Those were tragically lost in the Bedenham explosion of 1951. The current windows, installed in 1953, are a symbol of resilience and rebirth. The north wall bears witness to the church’s military connections. It’s adorned with regimental plaques, each telling a silent story of service and devotion. St Andrew’s Church served the Presbyterian and Reformed Christian community for nearly 170 years. It closed its doors in December 2022. Yet, its story echoes on, reminding us of the power of faith and community, even in a far-flung corner of the world.
