St Andrew’s Church has stood as a spiritual beacon for centuries.

First documented in 1182 its foundations are much older. Construction of the current Gothic structure began around 1210. It was completed roughly 1370. A devastating fire in 1416 significantly damaged the church. It was meticulously rebuilt later in the 15th century. The flat ceiling with a pointed barrel is a result of modifications around 1830. Look closely above the southern main entrance. You’ll find a crucifixion relief dating from around 1370. Another stone relief nearby depicting the Lamentation of Christ is from 1450. These intricate details offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship of the past.

The Reformation reached Erfurt in 1522. Since then St Andrew’s Church has been a Protestant place of worship. In 1604 it merged with the neighboring congregation of St Maurice’s. A further merger with St Michael’s Church happened in 1973. The church’s history reflects the changing religious landscape of Erfurt.

The organ within St Andrew’s Church deserves special mention. Built between 1987 and 1989 it is a modern instrument housed in a historical case from 1787. It features 25 stops across two manuals and a pedal. Some of the pipe material reused in the new organ originated from a much earlier organ. The meticulous construction of the organ reflects a devotion to musical heritage.
