“Ever wondered how a small seed of faith grew into a mighty tree spreading its branches across Ghana?” That’s the story of the Anglican Diocese of Accra and its many churches including St. Ambrose Anglican Church.

The Anglican Diocese of Accra’s story began in 1909. It emerged from the Diocese of Equatorial Africa. This was after two centuries of dedicated missionary work. The United Society for the Partnership of the Gospel played a crucial role. They started their work in Cape Coast in 1751. Their mission spread throughout the Gold Coast. This growth led to the creation of the Diocese of Accra.

Initially, the diocese was led by expatriate bishops. They were sometimes viewed as colonial figures. The church was closely associated with the British colonial government.

Ghana gained independence in 1957. Then the Diocese of Accra began to have Ghanaian leaders. The first was Rt Rev Dr Ishmael Samuel Mills LeMaire. He took office in 1968. He was followed by Rt Rev Francis William Banahene Thompson and Most Rev Dr Justice Ofei Akrofi. Currently, Rt Rev Dr Daniel Sylvanus Mensah Torto is the bishop. He was consecrated in 2012.

The Diocese of Accra is the oldest in the Internal Province of Ghana. It is the largest in terms of clergy and churches. It has over one hundred parishes, congregations, and missions. Over 120 clergy members serve the diocese.

The Diocese of Accra has contributed significantly to the Church of the Province of West Africa. Two of its bishops have become Archbishops. They are Most Rev Dr I.S.M LeMaire and Most Rev Dr J. O. Akrofi.

Under Rt Rev Dr I.S.M. LeMaire, several dioceses were formed from the Accra Diocese. These include Kumasi, Cape Coast, Koforidua, Sekondi, and Sunyani-Tamale. The Diocese of Accra has many “daughter” and “granddaughter” dioceses. This shows its vitality and viability.

Today, St. Ambrose Anglican Church continues to be a beacon of faith. It is easily accessible by public transport. Several bus lines stop nearby. These include the 15, 351 and 92. The closest bus stop is Dome Old Station. It is just a short walk away.

So, as you stand before St. Ambrose Anglican Church remember its history. It grew from humble beginnings. It became a vital part of Accra and Ghana. It is a testament to faith, growth, and the enduring spirit of the Anglican community.
