What secrets does St Agnes Church hold within its walls? Here in Harare, St Agnes isn’t just a building. It is a testament to faith, a symbol of purity, and a tribute to a young martyr. St Agnes Church stands as a beacon of hope, named after Saint Agnes of Rome, a girl who valued her devotion to Christ above all else. Agnes, born in 291 AD, was known for her unwavering faith and commitment to purity. She declared Jesus Christ as her only spouse, rejecting numerous suitors from wealthy and powerful families. This angered many, leading to her persecution and eventual martyrdom. According to some accounts, she was condemned to be dragged naked through the streets. But her hair miraculously grew, shielding her. Men who attempted to violate her were struck blind. When sentenced to death, she faced it with the joy of a bride on her wedding day. Tied to a stake, the flames refused to touch her. Finally, an officer beheaded her, her spilled blood soaked up by cloths held by fellow Christians. St Agnes Church echoes this unwavering spirit. It is a place where the echoes of her devotion resonate within the hearts of the faithful.
