St. Ägidius

Beneath the slender spire of St. Ägidius, a story unfolds. A story of two sacred spaces, a modern marvel and a relic of the past. St. Ägidius Church, a post-war testament to faith, rises before you. Its rhythmic wall pillars and sharp tower reach for the heavens. This architectural gem, completed in 1953 by Thomas Wechs, houses a poignant “Beweinung Christi” by Karl Radinger and an 18th-century Madonna. The grand organ, installed in 1958 by Hindelang, fills the sanctuary with its rich tones, largely unchanged despite occasional modifications. The story of St. Ägidius extends beyond these walls. Nearby, nestled within the Ägidiuspark, lies the original St. Ägidius Chapel. This 16th-century sanctuary, once part of the vanished “Remboldschlösschen,” stands as a quiet counterpoint to the modern church. Extended in 1711, the chapel boasts a three-sided apse and a charming domed tower. Both structures, though separated by time and architectural style, share a dedication to St. Ägidius, their stories intertwined. The relics from the chapel now reside within the church, a symbolic passing of the torch. The vibrant mosaics on the pulpit, the life-sized clay figures of the Fourteen Holy Helpers adorning the facade, the carved St. Ägidius figure replacing the ceramic relief, all whisper tales of faith and artistry.
