Did the Knights Templar once roam these very grounds? Not quite, but their Teutonic cousins did. Welcome to St. Ägidien, a church steeped in history, nestled within Regensburg’s heart. This unassuming sanctuary whispers tales of the Deutscher Orden, the Teutonic Order. Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria bequeathed the predecessor church, also dedicated to Saint Ägidius, to the order in 1210. This marked the birth of Bavaria’s first Teutonic Order commandery. This commandery was pivotal, becoming the first in the later bailiwick of Franconia. St. Ägidien wasn’t always the Gothic marvel you see before you. The original Romanesque structure proved too small for the burgeoning commandery by the mid-13th century. Around 1270, they embarked on an ambitious expansion. A new, single-aisled nave arose, only to remain unvaulted due to financial constraints. The 14th century ushered in further transformations. Two asymmetrical aisles were added, extending the church westward. The present choir, a testament to Gothic artistry, took shape under Commander Marquard Zollner von Rotenstein before 1396. The church’s vaulting, with its distinctive features, likely emerged later, in the 15th century. St. Ägidien wasn’t immune to the changing tides of style. In 1683, the commandery buildings underwent expansion, encroaching upon the church’s aisles. A Baroque makeover swept through the interior, altering its aesthetic. After secularization in the early 19th century, the commandery met its end, and St. Ägidien fell into disrepair. A revival came between 1884 and 1888, led by Domvicar Georg Dengler. The restoration sought to reclaim the church’s Gothic heritage, but the result was a somber, uninviting space. Thankfully, a subsequent renovation in 1958 unearthed remnants of Gothic and Renaissance artistry beneath the gray wash. The church was reborn, brighter and more vibrant. The stone arches were returned to their former glory, and the interior found a balance between history and reverence. Further restoration in 1989-1990, marking 800 years of the Teutonic Order’s presence, revealed hidden entrances on the choir’s south side. A new altar and ambo, crafted from sandstone by Eggenfeldener artist Joseph Michael Neustifter, now grace the interior. And in 2016, a new Sandtner organ filled the church with renewed musical life. As you stand before St. Ägidien today, remember the echoes of history that resonate within these walls. From humble beginnings to grand aspirations, from decline to rebirth, St. Ägidien stands as a testament to Regensburg’s rich tapestry of history and faith.
