SS. Gregory & Augustine Catholic Church

Founded in 1911, SS. Gregory & Augustine Catholic Church stands as a testament to Oxford’s evolving religious landscape. The church arrived on the scene alongside SS. Edmund and Frideswide, another Catholic church established in the same year. Before their arrival, the Catholic community in Oxford relied on St. Aloysius and St. Ignatius. SS. Gregory & Augustine wasn’t officially a parish church until 1918 when the Code of Canon Law formalized the parochial system in England and Wales. Originally, it served as a “mission” church, gradually evolving into the parish we know today. Designed by Ernest Newton, a prominent figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, the church’s structure remains largely unchanged. The building, described by Nikolaus Pevsner as a “small and stuccoed rectangle,” features a distinctive cupola and a gently curved west window. Inside, a plaster tunnel-vault with tie beams completes the aesthetic. Stepping inside SS. Gregory & Augustine Catholic Church today, you can still experience much of its original design. The altar, for example, stands as it did over a century ago. The church has seen some subtle changes over time. The side chapel, now dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima, once housed a wooden confessional. Although beautifully carved, the confessional lacked soundproofing, prompting the construction of a dedicated confessional space on the opposite side of the nave. Look closely at the statues of Our Lady and St. Joseph. Older photographs reveal Our Lady’s original star-spangled halo and her Son’s unique crown, details lost during repainting. The church’s history also reveals a rich tradition of processions. A Deanery Corpus Christi procession and a parish procession following the Feast of the Sacred Heart were significant events. Photos from the 1940s show an impressive outdoor altar, no longer in existence, and the participation of Dominican and Benedictine communities.
