Sri Sri 108 Doyal Baba, originally named Sri Gour Goswami, was born in Bangladesh. He came from a Brahmin family. At the tender age of seven, his life took a turn when he was taken to a monastery by his Gurudev Sri Sri Gopibandhu Brahmachari. There he was raised as a monk and renamed Sri Dayalbandhu Brahmachari.
His guru recognized his divine potential. He was permitted to spread the holy name and initiate others. Thus, Sri Sri 108 Doyal Baba became a guru in his youth.
He initiated countless people irrespective of their background. Baba often entered Samadhi. He explained complex spiritual concepts in simple terms. People were drawn to him. They sought his kindness and wisdom.
To further his altruistic ideas, he started the Mahaprakash Math. He also founded the Dayal Sangha. These organizations focused on enlightenment and humanitarian service. Sri Sri 108 Doyal Baba entered Maha-Samadhi on April 20, 2001.
The Mahaprakash Math at Naktala Road is being renovated. The original Ashram building was quite simple. It had only four or five rooms. Guruji spent his last years there. It was not enough space for all his disciples who came from far and wide.
Baba felt sad he could not accommodate them. Only a few disciples could stay. They looked after his daily needs. Today the Ashram is being expanded. The goal is to accommodate more people who wish to stay. The complex will retain Guruji’s Samadhi Mandir and bedroom. There will be guest rooms and a prayer hall.
Sri Sri 108 Dayal Baba was considered a great yogi. He possessed immense spiritual power. His tales captivated those who were fortunate enough to be near him. He could do the impossible. However he never focused on material wealth. That is why the Ashram remained austere.
