Established in 1970 the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing SLIM stands proudly before you. Its history began not in grand halls but in the home of Mr Elmo de Alwis. Three students fueled by ambition and a shared vision gathered there. They dreamed of greater recognition for their marketing qualifications. Their discussions sparked a movement. A movement that would shape Sri Lanka’s marketing landscape.
Asoka de Lanerolle a key figure at Lever Brother played a pivotal role. He drafted the institute’s constitution. The first meeting took place in 1970 at the prestigious Planters’ Association in Galle Face. There the constitution was unanimously adopted. This marked the birth of the Ceylon Institute of Marketing.
The Ceylon Institute of Marketing later became the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing SLIM through Parliamentary Act No 41 of 1980. This act solidified its position as the nation’s leading marketing body. SLIM’s influence quickly grew. It partnered with the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration SLIDA. Together they launched a local Diploma in Marketing in 1994.
SLIM in Kandy one of its three original centers played a vital role in this growth. This branch trained generations of marketers. Many successful professionals owe their careers to SLIM’s rigorous education programs. The Kandy center offered the Preliminary Course in Marketing. It provided the Diploma in Business English & Personality Development. Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing PG DipM SL was also offered.
The institute didn’t stop at national qualifications. SLIM partnered with international institutions. It offered CIM UK qualifications. These included the Introductory Certificate in Marketing and the Diploma in Tourism Marketing. Students could even pursue an MBA or a Certificate in Personal Development through Buckinghamshire New University.
In 2010 SLIM planned to introduce an Introduction to Marketing course. This course aimed to educate schoolchildren about marketing’s importance. The goal was to nurture future professionals from a young age. The same year SLIM opened a Business School in Matara its fourth center joining those in Kandy Borella and Colpetty. They also expanded to ten franchised operations across Sri Lanka.
SLIM’s commitment extends beyond education. It actively promotes marketing. Their mission is to establish marketing as a driving force enhancing business and national value. Today SLIM boasts over 1000 students and 300 vibrant members. This legacy began right here in Kandy. It continues to flourish shaping the future of marketing in Sri Lanka. The dedication and vision of those first three students resonate in the success of SLIM. It’s a story of passion innovation and national impact. A story written in this very place.
