Have you ever stumbled upon a Shiva Lingam, a sacred symbol of divine energy? In the heart of Anna Nagar, Chennai, stands the Sri Chandramouleeswarar Thirukovil. This temple’s story begins not with ancient stones, but with a modern-day discovery. Several hundred years ago, a Shiva temple graced this land. Shiva was known as Paleeswarar. Time and neglect took their toll. The temple crumbled. The land was eventually designated for a housing project by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board. Locals unearthed a large Shiva Lingam from an empty plot during the 1970s. They sought guidance from Kanchi Mutt Periyava. He confirmed the lingam belonged to the lost Paleeswarar Temple. He instructed them to build a new temple using the same lingam. He asked that it be named Sri Chandramouleeswarar Thirukovil. The temple was built and consecrated in 1978. The temple’s main deity, Sri Chandramouleeswarar, is represented by this rediscovered lingam, standing an impressive five feet tall. The consort, Sri Tripura Sundari, resides in a separate shrine, her hand raised in blessing. The temple complex expanded over time. Shrines for other deities were added including Vinayagar, Subramaniar with Valli and Devasena, Natarajar, and Bairavar. The Sri Chandramouleeswarar Thirukovil is more than just a place of worship. It’s a story of rediscovery and community devotion. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of urban development, ancient history can resurface. The temple is a beacon of hope. It’s known as a place to alleviate the fear of death. Special rituals are performed. Devotees pray for health and children.
