“Lost your pearl earring, have you?” a wizened woman chuckled, pointing a gnarled finger towards Sri Arulmigu Muthumariamman Allayam. “She’ll find it for you. Muthu, the pearl, Mariamman, the mother. She looks after everything here in Poonamallee.” Sri Arulmigu Muthumariamman Allayam isn’t grand or imposing. It’s a small temple, tucked away on Anjaneyar Kovil Street. Yet, it holds a powerful presence. This presence draws devotees from all corners of Poonamallee. They come to pay their respects to Muthumariamman, a fierce incarnation of Goddess Sakthi. The temple’s simple facade belies its rich history. It’s older than the nearby Vaitheeswaran Temple. The original south-facing sanctum housed a simple facial idol of Muthumariamman. Later, a larger, more striking idol, carved from black stone, joined the original. Goddess Selliamman also resides within the sanctum, her presence adding another layer to the temple’s spiritual tapestry. Outside, a pair of Dwara Baalakis guard the entrance. A Simha Vaahanam (lion vehicle), a Bali Peedam (sacrificial altar), and a trident stand before the sanctum. A massive peepal tree, wrapped in a divine cloth, dominates the courtyard. Beneath its sacred branches, you’ll find two Nagathamman idols. Nearby, another Amman idol sits beside a puthu, covered in turmeric and kumkum, a place of reverence and offerings. At the rear of Sri Arulmigu Muthumariamman Allayam, an east-facing shrine houses Vembuli Amman, flanked by Ganapathy and Murugan. The main gopuram bursts with color. Various depictions of Goddess Sakthi adorn its surface. Idols of Angalamman, Durgai Amman, and Karumariamman surround the main shrine. Even the roof of the pillared mandapam is a riot of vibrant hues. Sri Arulmigu Muthumariamman Allayam is more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub of the community, a testament to the unwavering devotion of its followers. Come Tamil Aadi month, the temple swells with devotees. They celebrate Muthumariamman with fervor and reverence. The air crackles with energy. The scent of incense hangs heavy. The rhythmic chants and the clang of bells fill the air. Even on regular days, the temple offers a haven of peace amidst the bustling streets of Poonamallee. So, if you find yourself near Anjaneyar Kovil Street, take a moment to step inside Sri Arulmigu Muthumariamman Allayam. You might not find a lost earring. But you might just find something far more precious: a connection to the divine, a glimpse into the heart of Poonamallee.
