Envision a time long ago, before the bustling streets of West Mambalam surrounded the Sri Adhi Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple. The area was known as Mylai Mel Ambalam, a place west of Mylai, characterized by majestic Maha Vilvam trees. It was here that Madavachar, a devotee of Lord Ranganathar in Srirangam, was guided by a divine dream. Childless and yearning for an heir, Madavachar prayed fervently. Lord Ranganathar appeared, instructing him to embark on a pilgrimage to Tiruvallikeni and Tirupati. During their journey, Madavachar and his wife found themselves lost and frightened in a dense forest. As they chanted Vishnu’s name, a young boy materialized, leading them to a crumbling mandapam and offering them sustenance. That night, Vishnu appeared again to Madavachar, revealing the presence of a hidden idol. The next morning, with the help of locals, Madavachar unearthed the idols of Lord Kesava and the Goddess. Thus began the story of the Sri Adhi Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple. The temple, constructed with the help of the local community, became a place of worship for Lord Vishnu in his form as Adhi Chenna Kesava Perumal, alongside his consort, Senkamalavalli Thayar. The temple also houses shrines for other deities, including Srinivasa Perumal, Ganesha, Andal, Chakrathazhwar, Manavala Mamunigal, Garudazhwar, and the Azhwars. Even the great Sri Ramanuja, a revered Vaishnava philosopher, visited and stayed at the Sri Adhi Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple, leaving his own mark on its sacred history. The temple has a rich tapestry of festivals, celebrating Ramanujar, Vaikasi Visakam, Nammalvar, Thiruvaadipooram, Krishna Jayanthi, and Vaikunda Ekadesi, among others. The Sri Adhi Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple stands as a testament to divine intervention, a place where dreams and devotion converged to create a sacred space in the heart of Chennai.
