Clutching my grandmother’s hand, I first entered the Sr. Sto. Nino Chapel. The air vibrated with the energy of fervent prayers. This wasn’t just a building. It was a living testament to faith. It’s the oldest Christian artifact in the Philippines. A gift from Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon and Hara Humamay upon their baptism in 1521. The statue itself is a work of art. Crafted in the Flemish style, the Santo Niño stands about 12 inches tall. He’s dressed as a Spanish monarch, complete with a crown, a golden orb, and a scepter. The details are exquisite. The serene expression on the Child Jesus’ face radiates peace and tranquility. The Sr. Sto. Nino Chapel, however, wasn’t always its home. The image was rediscovered in 1565 by Juan Camus, a sailor in Miguel Lopez de Legazpi’s expedition. Found amidst the ruins of a burnt village, the Santo Niño’s survival was seen as a miracle. A chapel, the precursor to the Sr. Sto. Nino Chapel, was built on that very spot. The Sr. Sto. Nino Chapel is also a witness to resilience. During World War II, a bomb struck the Basilica, damaging the roof but miraculously failing to explode. The Santo Niño was found dangling from an electric candle, held by its cape. It’s a powerful symbol of hope and protection. This devotion to the Santo Niño has spread far beyond Cebu. Filipinos around the world celebrate the Feast of the Santo Niño, or Fiesta Señor, on the third Sunday of January. The Sinulog, a vibrant dance festival, is a central part of the celebration. Here, within the Sr. Sto. Nino Chapel, amidst the throngs of devotees, you feel the palpable connection to history, faith, and tradition. The Sr. Sto. Nino Chapel isn’t just a place of worship.
